My grandmother once sent me deep into her walk-in closet to try and find a strand of pearls. Instead I found a Ziploc bag containing some metal screws.
When I asked her what they were, she told me point blank. They had come from her ankle.
Circa 1985, she was hit by a golf cart while golfing in Palm Springs. The impact broke her leg. The metal screws and plate in this picture held her ankle together for 10 years. My grandmother had kept them. Right next to the pearls.
This was the day the definition of “heirloom” widened for me, the day a seed was planted. I was expecting pearls but I found another chapter to someone’s story. This is the very reason The Heirloomist exists.
Your heirloom doesn’t have to be a precious necklace for us to turn it into art. It’s our job to make every object you send us shine in honor of its story— your story.
